Pap Smear — What You Need to Know

Share

A Pap smear is a quick, simple test that finds early changes in the cervix — long before they could ever become cancer. It is one of the best things you can do for your health.

What It Is

  • A soft brush gently collects a few cells from the cervix. It takes 2–3 minutes and is usually only mildly uncomfortable, not painful.

Who & When

  • Recommended for women aged 21–65.
  • Usually every 3 years, or a Pap + HPV test every 5 years after age 30. We personalise this for you.

How to Prepare

  • Don't book the test during your period.
  • For 2 days before, avoid intercourse, vaginal creams, douching or tampons.
  • Empty your bladder just before the test.

Understanding Your Result

  • 'Normal' means simply repeat as scheduled.
  • 'Unclear' or 'abnormal' usually means small changes needing a repeat test, an HPV test or colposcopy — it does NOT mean you have cancer.

When to Call Your Doctor

  • Bleeding between periods or after intercourse.
  • Unusual or foul-smelling vaginal discharge.
  • Pelvic pain — don't wait for your next Pap, book a visit.
