HPV Vaccine — Protection Against Cervical Cancer
The HPV vaccine protects against the virus that causes almost all cervical cancers and several other cancers. It is safe, effective, and one of the best gifts of protection you can give yourself or your daughter.
What Is HPV?
- A very common virus spread by skin and sexual contact. Some types cause cervical, vulvar, vaginal, anal and throat cancers, and genital warts.
Who Should Get It
- Best given to girls (and boys) aged 9–14, but still beneficial for women up to age 45.
- Can be given even if you are already sexually active or have had an abnormal Pap.
Number of Doses
- Age 9–14: usually 2 doses (at 0 and 6–12 months).
- Age 15–45: usually 3 doses (at 0, 1–2 and 6 months).
Safety & Important Points
- Very safe — given to millions worldwide. Side effects are mild and short (sore arm, mild fever).
- The vaccine does NOT replace Pap smears — keep up regular screening.
