Care After Open (Abdominal) Surgery

Share

Open surgery uses a larger cut, so healing takes a little longer than keyhole surgery. With good care at home you will recover well.

Wound & Pain Care

  • Keep the dressing clean and dry; follow our advice on changing it and showering.
  • Take painkillers on time — good pain control lets you breathe deeply and walk.
  • Support the wound with a pillow when you cough or sneeze.

Movement & Chest Care

  • Walk a little several times a day and avoid lying flat all day.
  • Do deep-breathing exercises to prevent chest infection.

Diet, Rest & Recovery

  • Begin with fluids and light food, then build up to high-protein, fibre-rich meals; drink plenty of water and don't strain.
  • Avoid heavy lifting and strenuous work for about 6 weeks; increase activity gradually.
  • Some pulling or numbness near the scar is normal for weeks; the scar fades over months.

When to Call Your Doctor

  • Fever, or a wound that is red, leaking pus or opening.
  • Heavy bleeding, or severe or increasing pain.
  • Vomiting, or not passing gas/stool, or a swollen tummy.
  • Calf pain or swelling, or any breathlessness.
