Copper-T (IUD): Everything You Need to Know

What is Copper-T?

The Copper-T, also known as an Intrauterine Device (IUD), is a small T-shaped device made of flexible plastic and copper wire. It's inserted into your uterus by a trained healthcare provider and provides long-term, reversible contraception.

How Does It Work?

The copper in the IUD creates an environment that's toxic to sperm, preventing fertilization. It also thickens cervical mucus, making it harder for sperm to reach the egg. The Copper-T is 99% effective at preventing pregnancy.

Benefits of Copper-T

  • Long-lasting protection: 5-10 years depending on the type

  • Hormone-free: Perfect for women who can't or don't want hormonal contraception

  • Immediately reversible: Fertility returns as soon as it's removed

  • Cost-effective: One-time procedure for years of protection

  • No daily pills to remember: Set it and forget it

  • Common Concerns Addressed

    Does insertion hurt?
Most women experience cramping during insertion, similar to period cramps. We can provide pain relief medication if needed.

    Will it affect my periods?
Some women experience heavier periods for the first few months, but this usually improves with time.

Can my partner feel it during intercourse?
No, the IUD sits inside your uterus. Only thin strings hang into the cervix, which are rarely felt.

    Who Should Consider Copper-T?

Copper-T is ideal for women who:
  • Want long-term, reversible contraception

  • Prefer hormone-free options

  • Have completed their family but aren't ready for permanent sterilization

  • Are breastfeeding (safe to use)

  • Can't use hormonal contraception due to medical reasons

  • When to Avoid Copper-T

You should not use Copper-T if you:
  • Are pregnant or suspect pregnancy

  • Have untreated pelvic infections

  • Have abnormally shaped uterus

  • Have copper allergy (very rare)

  • Have unexplained vaginal bleeding

  • The Insertion Process

    1. Consultation: We'll discuss your medical history and answer questions
    2. Examination: A pelvic exam to ensure proper placement
    3. Insertion: Takes just 5-10 minutes in our clinic

    Caring for Your IUD

  • Check strings monthly after your period

  • Schedule annual check-ups

  • Inform healthcare providers about your IUD before any procedures

  • Seek immediate care if you experience severe pain, fever, or abnormal discharge

  • Removal

The IUD can be removed anytime by a healthcare provider. The procedure is quick and fertility returns immediately.
